Statement from the Ministry for Justice, Equality and Governance. Inauguration of a Department of Justice: the investment in justice is paying off.
The Minister for Justice, Equality and Governance Edward Zammit Lewis inaugurated the new building that is being rented for the Department of Justice to operate from. They did this in the presence of Permanent Secretary Johan Galea and Director Katia Caruana.
He explained that the functions of the department are to coordinate, support and supervise those areas that have to do with the administration of justice.
Minister Zammit Lewis continued by explaining that the Department of Justice will be restructured. The idea is that the department will incorporate three separate offices, i.e. two additional new offices, apart from its main functions, which have been grouped under the heading of ‘Justice Affairs Unit’. These functions and responsibilities are the primary task of the department. The other sections, according to the said Restructuring Plan, are the following:
(i) the section that will be incorporating the Office of Criminal Conduct and Sentences, which task will be transferred under the Department of Justice from the Commissioner of Police
(ii) the unit dedicated to Research, Data Management, and ‘Justice Policy’
Minister Zammit Lewis concluded that through this investment the government continues to show how much of a priority this sector is. The government’s plan for justice – which in a holistic way will be better and more efficient justice – is already leaving concrete results like those that were obtained in the past days. The Maltese and the Gowis continue to be at the center of the work of this government even in the field of justice as a government for the people and of the people.
